The Korean Experience! ... JINDO International Christian Music Festival 2009.

Photos from the Karleby Newspaper interview about Korea. These were taken by the journalist at in my kitchen. Scanned article in Swedish. (also available as pdf)

The Karleby newspaper journalist from Österbottens tidning wanted to see all the newspaper clippings from the various Korean newspapers and magazines, and also what was happening with Angel House International Missions Ministries Association over the decades.

The photo at the top is one of the many articles for our local newspaper in my weekly column in ÖT (Österbottens tidning) newspaper over the past 10 years that I have written about concerning racism in Finland.

The next photo is the official korean head dress! On it is actually the logo from this years' gospel festival where I ministered at, on the Korean Island called Jindo, a few weeks ago. They love color in that country! You see brightly color posters, signs, billboards, just filled with extremely flourescent colors everywhere...

Next photo is taken at the kitchen window, with the three angels, hand-painted with natural colors, by an italian artist friend of mine Carlo di Meroni in Milano. He knew I had Angel House and so these made nice hangings for the window. The photo does not do them justice, as they are at their best when the full light of the sun shines through them. They light up the kitchen. Marvelous!

The Internet, with all of its flaws at times, does have some good points too. For example, a few years ago I was surfing, which is something I rarely have time to do.  In googling gospel singers around the world, I happened upon one multi-platinum performer that lives in the Philippines. Long story short, we have become good friends I guess you could say, though we have never met face-to-face.

He was sharing with me about what was happening in Christian Music in South Korea and told me that he had just returned from a marvelous festival in the area of Jindo, an island of the country.

The Annual Jindo Clean Sea and Music Festival Poster.

This artist, Gary Valenciano is his name,  went on to suggest that I should contact them and maybe they would invite me to sing. But me with my "matala profiili" Finnish for: =Low profile attitude, thought that this would never happen. Long story short...it did! (Oh yea of little faith!)

I have just returned from an unforgettable time in this fascinating land that is so very full of color and joy.

From the moment Finnair set down in Seoul, I felt "at home" in this warm and gracious country.

(On Finnair, back home to Finland...)

Even the Security and Customs personnel seemed like old friends. No stress from them, only inquiring what I was doing there and that they were happy to have me in their country. How often does this happen when you go through Security?!

When I came outside to the arrival area, there was my 19 year old Korean translator, Lisa. She would be my voice during my stay in her country.

(My 19 year old translator Lisa, watching over while I am signing cd autographs at the festival.)

Where do I begin?!

In my 40 years of being in Christian Arts, being in missions work as well as secular, I have had the privilege to travel the world. To meet new people and to see what is happening around the globe. But never before have I seen, in the area of Gospel music, so many young artists. Not ever!

Gospel Music

... seems to be a way of life there. It is nothing unusual in their country and at this festival alone, there were some 20 or so performing groups, that were all first class and at the very top of excellence and professionalism.

The pastors, youth leaders of the various churches and organisations in fact encourage  and likewise, support, financially, (oh Lord, there is that word that many try to avoid).... those that feel called to this area of Christian Arts, to go after their dreams and goals with full force and believing that nothing is impossible with God.

Being a journalist as well, I naturally asked them if they are performing full-time?  They replied: "Yes of course!"  Some of them, even at the age of 20 or so, had already released 2 or 3 well-selling cds and dvds ...

Many are represented by top-notched agents and management firms there.  Though all of this sounds maybe like work in the secular world, any many aspects are, if we are speaking of doing one's occupation well, these are indeed christian principles that often we in the church overlook in this particular area... I found that these performers are very serious and dedicated to the One that has called them.

The Annual Jindo Clean Sea and Music Festival as it is called, has for its team a group of pastors from all over the country and from every denomination. I had the joy of dining with them and it was very interesting to hear them all share their expectation and excitement of what is happening at this event and around their country as they proudly announce the Good News in various artistic formats.

It was not only music represented there, but dance from the very traditional korean dances, to hip-hop and everything in between.  They had traditional drummers, men and women, that were just awesome to hear and watch.  I have heard a lot of drumming in my day, but had no idea one could really make this kind of music with such an instrument alone!

I was able to spend time with all of the artists during my stay on this island, which in itself is extraordinary and a wonder to see.  I was taken on a cruise to visit the so-called "Animal Islands"... And believe me, when I saw them, I could not believe my eyes! They REALLY looked like all kinds of animals. You have to go there just to see this if nothing else!

Don't even get me started talking about Korean Cuisine. My my my... So full of color, that even as it is presented to you, your mouth waters and you know you are in for a treat.  At each meal, they explained to me the medicinal purposes of each vegetable, fish, rice, noodles that I placed on my tongue. This was not just a lover of fine cuisine's delight, it was a lesson in how to stay strong and keep your body well at the same time.

Koreans are very active people. I saw people my age (which is really old folks!) and even older, walking up and down extremely steep inclines, without even breaking a sweat.  Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and should be treated as such.

Another thing I came to greatly appreciate is how  young Korean's respect the adults and elderly. They never begin eating until the oldest does. You don't even sit down until the older person does. You open the door for the elderly. They are always allowed first in everything, because Koreans believe that you learn, you grow, you develop into a better person, by respecting, listening and following the teachings of one's elders.

I remember getting into a car, or trying to...  I was with a young group of singers and when the car door opened, of course trying to be courteous, I wanted to let them into their seats first. But then it began! It was: "No YOU first! And me trying to be polite, I insisted: "No YOU first!" That went on for a while it seemed, until one of the young singers explained to me, that because I was "older", I had to sit first and then they could get in...  Live and learn as my mom used to say!

There are many packed churches in South Korea on Sundays. When I say packed, I mean exactly there. Some of the congregations overwhelming in numbers. Some even in the hundreds of thousands attending, regularly, on sunday mornings. They like going to church! It took me back to my roots at home in Dallas and my church there in Paris France. In Paris, we had only about 2000 in attendance on Sundays and we thought that was hugh!

The world´'s largest church, where I had the privilege of going and sharing the Word was Pastor David Yonggi Cho's... Over 1 million members. Yeah, you read right. Over one million and I am not just talking about statistics, but people that actually attend on a regular basis.

The Jindo Region of Korea is famous for many things, but one of the things I just fell in love with is the Jindo Dog. Have you ever seen one?

I have two cats:Bijou and Mélange, but if I could have taken one of these adorable creatures back on the plane with me to Karleby I would have!  They originated in this region, known for their faithfulness, their intelligence and gentleness.

In this photo above I am at the home of  Presbyterian Pastor Jeon with a ministry to drug addicts and alcoholics. He raises Jindo Dogs as well and 10 of the puppies greeted me! Pastor Jeon is also on the festivals' Board of Directors. He sort of adopted me during my stay there and took me everywhere. Such a blessing...

Organisation seems to be the key word for Koreans. And they seem to do this with ease and very little stress. I wonder if I have a calling to live and work there?!  Näh! Finland is the love of my life, but I have a feeling I will be working there quite a bit in the upcoming years...  We could all use a bit less stress and strife in our lives...

The director of the Jindo Clean Music and Sea Festival is Mr. Geon Hur.   You see us here below in his office.

I cannot say enough praise for this guy. He has one of the sweetest spirits and kindness heart of anyone I know.  You could feel the brotherhood the moment we met. There was no warming up to each other and all that.  In fact, I had no idea that he was even the director in charge of such an event, as he was so relaxed and acted like he just came there to have a good time. Well he did that too!

Geon was with me it seemed about 24 hours a day. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner together. I think I went to about 20 traditional korean restaurants and ate everything from raw sliced beef, to nice and chewy octopus and you name it, I ate and totally enjoyed every bite. It was a learning experience indeed.

He has had a vision for his country for years.  Geon has been instrumental likewise in arranging some of the totally hugh and awe-inspiring events in his nation. From organising massive coliseum events  and producing DVDs and "live" television for Californian Pastor Rick Warren ("The Purpose Driven Life" author), to other international figures that have come to his country.  I think he might also qualify as a finn, as he does it humbly, and always giving thanks to the Father for the opportunity to announce the Gospel to his own people.

The Demilitarized Zone

This is another area that is in much need of prayer. So many believers and those that are still searching are there, but they dare not say a word for fear of severe punishment or even death.  Geon Hur, the festivals' director, is planning a concert or festival of sorts in the future, for the benefit of North Korea.

He wants to invite artists to come and to join together in unity, in Christ, for a change to take place in the hearts of the leaders there. To support and to encourage those that live there and that are daily persecuted for their faith or simply because they want to be free. Every man and woman deserves this.

We, the artists and ministers, are encouraged by Geon likewise, if inspired, to write songs for the people of North Korea, that we can perform at this upcoming event, probably in 2010...

He is a visionary. Someone has to take action. What I have come to appreciate about him, is that he does not just speak, he acts. And when we act, something happens. It is strange to be on the free side of the border, knowing that just a few steps away, life is not the same at all. We have a lot to be grateful for and should never take our freedom for granted.

Never seen so many churches in one city! Seoul is packed with them. And they are not empty  but overflowing as I stated earlier. All faiths are represented with The Full Gospel Churches becoming larger and larger, yet still working in unity with all denominations for the cause of Christ.

Two outstanding Christian groups I really became close with during my time there at the festival and now today, we are in constant contact since my return were the group: "LAST".  They are three young men who can sing like you would not believe. Gospel to the max! You WILL be hearing them on my radio show: "Fat City!"

Then there is the soul singing sisters of Seoul, rightly name: "The Soul Singers!"  These girls have got it goin' on people! Wow!

I had the great privilege likewise to dine with Korea's famed Opera Diva, but  after meeting her, she is so not a diva at all!... Chung-Wha Lim. The most amazing woman and so humble.

We had such a fine time, sitting there on the floor, Korean style, and sharing a meal together.  I have never done such with such a famed star of Opera. But being with her was a joy and we had one thing indeed in common, our love for Christ and she was one, that was proud to let others know of her faith.

Color?

One of the first things that hit me when I arrived in Seoul was color. Yes, you heard right. Everything is so bright and full of color that you get the impression there is a 24 hour party going on.  I found this to be beautiful and in it's own way gave you a feeling of joy and not depression.  Somehow I feel that having so much color in publicity, the buildings, the clothes, the food, etc, keeps people with a more positive and encouraging attitude about life in general...

Even their game shows, though I could not understand a word of their language, one could see that they really had such fun, such joy. I have never seem such and I travel a lot. It was almost like watching children at play.

I understand even better now from the Biblical viewpoint that we are: "to be as children". Somehow, in most countries, we are so far from that kind of attitude. The joy is often gone and we just seem to get up and say: "Oh well, it is another day...."  Instead of getting up and saying: "Hey World! This IS the day that the Lord has made and I WILL rejoice and be glad in it!"  Det låtar bättre!=Swedish for: That sounds better!

A New Korean Nick-name?

Yes, believe it or not, I have one now. In English it would be: "I am Jindo" literally. it was given to me when I was down on the Jindo Island I am am loving it of course.

As you know in Finland for over 2 decades I am known by the majority as: "Risto-Kalle" which is the literal translation of my french name in Finnish. And my Finnish Swedish-speaking friends call me: "Crille".  It has been so that with all these years, I rarely sign the name my parents gave me!  That is when you know you have been a long time in another country.  But to my new Korean friends, you can call me: "I am Jindo!" Nice eh?!

In conclusion...

There is so much that I could write you about this Korean Experience. And I am sure I have forgotten many things in this report. Each day something comes back to mind about my time there. It is a blessing to be able to travel the world for the One who gave you life. To share His Good News and to learn likewise from other cultures, languages...

I am not a rich man if we speak of material things. But I am rich, to me, in what matters. Things that money cannot buy.  Now I am filled with joy with my new brothers and sisters so far away. What a Family we have.

For me though I am likewise glad to return to my homeland, Finland.

There is a saying in swedish-speaking Finland: "Borta bra, men hemma bäst!" And that says it all.  What does that mean?

Translated it means: There is no place like home.  Literally translated it is: Being away is good, but best being at home!" I like both!

Much love!

Korean interview, via e-mail with Christian-Charles de Plicque with English translation August 2009 1.

1. What’s your feeling (impression) of visiting in Korea?

Exciting! Never been there before, but have read much about what God is doing there and so blessed and privileged to be a part in this, working with all of you for the glory of Christ.

2. What are your expectations of ‘2009 International Jindo C+Music Festival’?

I have no idea what the Lord will do when I arrive. I have no "expectations" in that sense, but I know something great is going to happen because where God is, something great always does! So, "expectations"?! I continue to expect marvelous things from our Lord right there in Seoul! “2009

3. What’s your motive to start Christian music ministry? When did you start?

Well I am a missionary first and foremost. Christian music plays a part of our work at Angel House International, but of course we cannot give concerts in the Artic Circle all the time. I think you have more of that in Korea that we actually do here. Things are changing though in Finland. My motive of course is simple: To announce the Good News of Jesus Christ!

I started as you know, over 45 years ago. Most black kids grow up in the States in church. It is our 2nd "home" away from home. So it is normal for us to sing and praise God. He is worthy!

4. Who are your musical influences?

Basically a dear friend since the '60's Andraé Crouch! He is a legend for most of us black and white gospel artists. By the way, he and his twin sister Sandra send their love to you all and long to get an invite to come and minister in Korea...

5. What’s your vision (career goal)?

My career if you can call it that, is my ministry. That will never change. To reach the world for Christ, although my base of ministry is in Finland.

6. Have you ever had some feeling of hardship or difficulties while you’ve been ministering?

Are you serious?! (Smile!) If we are true believers, then it is written that we WILL have them because our Lord had them too when He was on earth. But we overcome, the Word says, but our testimony and by the Blood of the Lamb. I am writing a new book about my life in missions and there there are maybe 10 million hardships over these 40 years of ministry! But the good news is that God has walked with me through them all and soon I am with you in Korea. There are hardships and there are mountaintops. Either place, Jesus is with us.

If you had, how did you overcome it?

The Word, Prayer, steadfastness, perserverance. And when I can not stand any longer, I KEEP STANDING!

7. What’s your favorite food?

Hot and spicy! Being french of course I love french and also italian food. But I am definitely looking forward to tasting Korean food.

On my "things to buy in Korea" list: One hardback, pictoral Korean cookbook! (In english or french please!)

I collect cookbooks as my grandmother was a great french chef and one good way of fellowshipping, as Jesus and His disciples did, was around the table and with brothers and sisters..

8. How would you describe your own music?

Soulful, full of simple basic truths.

I have a special vision to reach, in particular, unsaved artists. Most of the time they will not come to church. But somehow, and in particular in black gospel, this draws even non-believers in to concerts. They may not at first listen really to the text, especially if it is sung in another language, but there is something there that draws them.

Many say or call my style of music "bluesy". Well of course if they know anything about me and my working from childhood days with the late great blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, then they understand "why" my style is blues influenced. But that style of singing was just stolen by the devil from the church and then he changed the words and that is that.

So I want to take that back, in the name of Jesus and use it to glorify God for He alone is worthy of praise! But my style has gotten me into many secular jazz and blues festivals, always singing the gospel of course. And I have seen many seeds planted and some come to the Foot of the Cross backstage after a concert or speaking event.

I think this style of music really works especially in the areas God has called me to reach: The lost. I was lost too. Even growing up in church does not mean you are saved. We all have to make that personal decision. Glad I did and it is my prayer that our ministry at Angel House, will continue through music, through workshops, lectures at universities, Bible schools, churches, High schools, etc...

I want people to personally know my "Daddy"=Jesus, while there is still time.

Here is another church I will also be working with:

Hey! Check this out! (Facebook video link)

Shalom!

Thanks for your prayers as I make this long voyage soon, working with others, for the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The church: Yoido Full Gospel Church, Yoido, Seoul, South Korea.

This is the numero uno church in the world, if size is anything to go by, with over 800,000 members.

Yoido Full Gospel Church

Denomination: Pentecostal (Assemblies of God).

The building: It's a gigantic building that is shaped like a huge baseball stadium.

The lighting is very bright and everything about the place is... shall we say, rather "over the top".

Yoido Full Gospel Church outside

The neighbourhood: Yoido is an island on the south side of Seoul that is similar to Manhattan in many ways. There is the National Assembly, the Financial District, Stock Exchange... a very "high powered neighborhood" to say the least. This is good for the Gospel!

The Head pastor and found is Rev. David Yonggi Cho.

It is amazing what God is doing there!

"Joseph" =Kim Eun Teak. He will be my translator in August in Korea! Notice the yummy food!

Like me, he also works with children and uses puppets like I do. This is my french family member and ministry assistant. (No jokes please saying that he is much better looking than me!) : "François de Plicque". Most people find him much more interesting than me and he surely sings better!
