Quicktime movie: 11.5 MB: YWAM outreach. The Cultural House In Helsinki 1982 (6 / 7)
This begins with me Interviewing a young finnish sister during the final meeting I had for Youth With A Mission in Helsinki at the famed Cultural House. I did not know her at all. But when I am tired from weeks of non-stop ministry, as I was on that final evening, I would often look for someone in the audience to come up on the stage and sing with me. This would liven things up a bit!
After asking a few folk in the audience, and they kindly refused, suddenly I notice this young woman who happily agreed to come up and sing with me. It was a great time! She was so open as you see on this homemade video that someone was kind enough to send to me at home in Paris after I returned to France.
We had given around 30 concerts and meetings in less than 2 weeks. Out on the streets in snow blizzards, sharing Christ with the team and just ministering with a Finnish brother on acoustic guitar and me singing... At schools speaking at 7 a.m. each morning and it was outreach all over that city and I think we were at every church in Helsinki!
After my concert, we showed the great film: "The Hiding Place" (Corrie Ten Boom). Then we gave an invitation for people to come to receive Jesus. And it was mindblowing how many came.
You cannot see on this part of the video just how many people were there in the balcony and way in the back of this concert hall, but it was full, with the exception of up front on the left side of the seats. Over 200 people gave their hearts to Christ (not that numbers matter), but the Holy Spirit moved in a powerful way.
I will always remember this night. You could feel the presence of God in that place. The amazing thing was that this was free to all to come, no admission fee, and the YWAM team, was out in the snow, passing out tracks about the concert and we had no idea who would come or not. But it was a full house and God was lifted high!
Anja, who was my faithful translator for all those meetings from early morning until after midnight was amazing. She was student at the university of Helsinki in those days. She is now a doctor, married and mother.
I hope someday you will come to visit so you can see all of this video. It is one of the rare videos I have from those days, with full finnish translation. I give my testimony, which many might not have heard and it makes a difference of course when you can hear it in our own language. That was way back in 1982. I had no idea in those days, that I would ever leave Paris to live here. But God knew...
That next morning, the leader of Perjantai Kristukselle r.y. =Friday For Christ Organisation, Tapani Suonto, sadly said to me: "Christian-Charles, we have no money to give you for your hard work, but here is a First Class Cabin ticket, on the Finnjet Cruise ship, from Helsinki to Germany. Also we want to bless you with a First Class train ticket with private compartment from Germany to Paris." I didn't come to Finland for money anyway. But that trip back across the sea was awesome! And my cabin, first class, with all that great food. Man! I was in Heaven! (Well almost!)
Serve the Lord. There is no great blessing, than to see people come to the Foot of the Cross.
Shalom!

(Quicktime. 9.83 MB. 3 minutes 51 seconds.)
Flash from the past!
This was filmed in 1981, by the Finnish YLE television station in a parking lot at 5 a.m. in the morning in winter in the southern city of Åbo (Turku). I was singing "live" with playback music. In those days I knew no musicians in Finland and was still living in Paris. Not always in perfect pitch singing on this one, but the message is clear... We've got to "Tell Them", that Jesus loves them!

Angel House International DVD video Review
English Version
"The Story Of Gospel Music: The Power In The Voice!"
Produced by: The BBC England. Warner Brothers | 90 minutes | 4:3 Stereo
This DVD is a "must" for any music documentary collection of secular music or Gospel music. It gives the history of Black Gospel from the roots to today's Songs of Praise. You will see the legendary Tramaine Hawkins "live", singing the great John Newton classic hymn: "Amazing Grace" for example. Newton was a very rich man and a slave owner...
This active: "shoutin" or: "gettin' happy" as we say in the black church, comes from our roots in Africa in fact. The genius of the Black people is that we have never let the influence of the western culture, rob us of our enthusiasm and our worship.
I think what has made White christianity (in the States for example in those days) so sterile, is that somehow they bought into the idea that being emotional was un-intellectual... which is simply not true.
In 1921 in America, the first book of Gospel songs, written by 4 black composers, was published by the National Baptist Convention. The leaders of the convention during this period, decided to accept "Black Gospel" "on a certain level" at least. It was entitled: "Gospel Pearls!"
One of the most well-known of these four, was a man named Thomas Dorsey. He was originally a blues singer that went by the name of: "Georgia Tom". In the 1920's he sang a lot of "off-colored" blues. But suddenly one day, he experienced an epiphany or a revelation, in that he lost a lot of money. Dorsey took this as some kind of sign from Heaven and turned his considerable song writing talents for the purpose of proclaiming the Gospel.
Mahalia (Jackson), who you will see and hear, from her 1964 concert also on this DVD, Jackson sings one of Dorsey's many gospel songs. She came to Chicago when she was only 16 years of age. Mahalia and Dorsey traveled all over the USA, performing his songs from his songbooks for Black churches and large conventions. Later Mahalia became the woman responsible for introducing Gospel music, to the wider world in those days.
Sister Rosetta Thorpe came from what we call: "The Sanctified Church" (Pentecostal). She was a black woman with blonde hair and in those days, that was rather shocking in itself. On top of that, she was the first and only woman that we know of, that played an electric guitar in the church in the '30's and 40's.
Sister Rosetta was a "megastar" and the most controversial. You'll see what I mean when you see this DVD. Singing the Gospel, she pulled in literally thousands to her concerts, did television and movie appearances, which was truly rare for any Black at that time. You have to see her in the documentary.
Also in this wonderful historical production, are the Fabulous Clara Ward Singers, appearing at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958. Never before had any Gospel music been presented at a jazz festival, with only a White audience. It was ground breaking back then, for today we hear the Gospel all the time at such events.
James Cleveland is another great artist on this production. He was called "The Prince of Gospel". I had a chance to sing in his choir as a teenager and will never forget this experience. He was a true motivator for any singer. He was a master of this Art the Lord had given him and one of the very first dynamic and energetic choir directors ever. James could sing! He and Aretha were great friends and performed often together.
The Edwin Hawkins Singers are likewise featured on this DVD. They are performing the classic: "Oh Happy Day!" live, on British Television. The song went to Number One on the British secular Charts (A Gospel Song!) Even in 2005 do we rarely, if ever hear of such a thing... But when they returned to the States, after a triumphant tour in England, the song was considered "too worldly" by Black American believers. Now everybody around the world is singing it.
The music of the African American religious experience has been the primary element that has bound Black life together in the obstacles that it has faced: racism; segregation; lynchings...you name it.
And had it not been for the cohesive character of our African Sacred music and also can I say for discussion, likewise secular music, I don't think that Blacks would have made it on the North American continent.
It (Black Gospel), has been the primary ingredient that has bound us together as a surviving people.
The audiences "get happy" with Cissy Houston (Whitney's mom); The Dixie Hummingbirds, Vanessa Bell Armstrong; The Clark Sisters; John P. Kee (A remarkable performance!); the great evangelist, Grammy- winning singing sister, Shirley Caesar (her first UK performance in 1984) etc. From the passionate devotion of Harlem's ARC Choir, to the clear tones of the famous Fisk University Jubilee Singers, Gospel's greatests are still spreading the Good News.
In my opinion, this is an exceptionally fine documentary about American Black Gospel Music. This is a story of a redemptive spirit that heals communities and flows through generations. This DVD traces the path of this life-changing music from West Africa to the inner city of America, while definitive performances of Gospel classics fill the story with sound.
My advice: Get this DVD and be blessed!

Mångsidigt om svart gospel Kyrkpressen: torsdag 12.5.05
DVD The Story Of Gospel Music:
The Power In The Voice! Warner
Boken
hette Gospel Pearls.
